I don't know what this is, I'm sure someone here can help. This is a gourami that's about 4-5 months old. Yesterday I changed out the gravel, for well washed sand, the tank got real dirty before I moved all the fish to a separate container. I had to do several water changes after adding the sand, it's a 30 gallon, I changed 5 gal, refilled and changed 5 more gallons. The new water was treated, and about the same temp. What could have I done wrong? It's looks like his mouth and part of his face is ate up with fungus, his other tank mates seem to be fine, I'd like to treat it if you all think it might be necessary. I've included a few pics. Thanks all

I cant tell from those picks but if it is fungus looking then it could be mouth fungus you can quarantine and treat with a Fungus medicine. The Mardel brand has always worked great for me, I believe the actual medicine is called Melafix. Good luck and keep me posted

He passed within 30 min of my post, from what I could find it looks like cotton mouth, it was a very similar thing that wipe out my chiclid tank a several months ago.

Sorry to hear about your fish. I usually keep Melafix and Pimafix on hand, as I've found stressed out Gourami in particular to be susceptible to bacterial / fungal infections, probably due to inbreeding and hormones I would assume. Also, quarantine is a good idea, as these fungus have a nasty habit of spreading to other healthy fish.
