Hi Dreamcharmer, and welcome to the forum. That's a beautiful oscar you've got, I'm sorry I can't help you sex it though, my oscar knowledge is non-existant. There are lots of other members who have ample oscar experience, so I'm sure your question will be answered soon.

Welcome to AC. Oscars are very difficult to sex. The temperment is about the same for both sexes. The males may get slightly larger than the females but that is about it. Very large fish may be vented. NOT RECOMMENDED. This is done by turning them over and looking directly at the ventral openings. Unfortunately i cannot help you out much beyond this. Hope to see you around

Hi Dreamcharmer.
Welcome to the forum.
I now see your Oscar and it is awesome!
I think it is a bit young to determine sex, but the colors are so pronounced I would have to guess at male for now.
As it matures, you may be able to see the underside of the fish and notice the male reproductive "parts".

Cichlid_Man thank you for the wonderful compliment....I think he is awesome. I pm'd you and told you the tale of how we got the oscar but I would also like to post it on here..........We actually saved this Oscar from starving to death when a guy that lived down the street from us moved out of a house and just left it there to starve to death. The owner of the house whom we had never met before came knocking at our door and asked us if we wanted the fish or it was going to die as he drives semi trucks for a living and is never home. My son begged us to please let him have it and now the oscar is truly loved by our entire family. And we have bought a very expensive filter system and we buy him real good food ect....I would be very grateful for any information on care or anything that would help our oscar. Thank you. As for the goldfish the little ones are feeder fish and the big one my husband thought that oscar would like it........and he does... If this is a bad idea by keeping the big goldfish with the oscar please let me know as I will get rid of the goldfish. We also have a large sailfin pleco....Boy does he make a mess. Any suggestions are more than welcome...I am very new to this fish experience, but I want to definately take the best care of our oscar....Let me tell you that I have completely and totally fallen in love with this oscar....He only wants me to feed him and he waits at the side of the tank where I come in after work and he gets so excited it as if he is dancing in his tank.....sometimes I wonder if it is my imagination or oscar really does recognize me and wants my attention. Maybe I'm just crazy.....
Hello, good question many more will probably be answered by next time.
