What kind and how many cichlids could go into a 15 gallon tank?

That tank would be limited to a single Ram, Krib, or Tanganyikan shell dwellers. Other than that there are very few cichlids that will due well in there. A 15gal tank would actually be a great size for Tanganyikan shellies, they are fascinating little creatures.

It would depend on which ones you get, they all stay quite small.

15 gallons would be a good size for a pair of german blue rams if you have soft water. Of course shellies or julies would be nice if your tap water is hard.

You can fit a pair of apisto borellii in there. Most smaller apistos will do great in that size tank. Just make sure there is enough hiding places and you should do great with a air of most apistos or rams.
