hi all
just wondering do silver scats have to be in brackish waters or can i keep him in a fresh water tank all his life becase i read thatin the wild when the parents are spawnig they lay there eggs in fresh water and the fry grow up a little and gradually go to brackish conditions and even completely salt water sometimes.if i have him in fresh water all his life can it harm him in any way

As with most brackish fish the parents migrate upstream and lay their eggs in FW as the eggs wont hatch in seawater..the fry do live in FW for some time but then like their parents they migrate toward the oceans for more rich feeding. Silver Scats require brackish water in the tank...a level of around 1.008-1.010 will keep them in good condition their entire lives. I have had a pair of silver scats for over 8 years and theyre still going strong. You can actually when they are mature slowly raise the SG their entire lives and have them living in complete marine conditions as well...they are very adaptable.

Stopped by my LFS today and they had a school of about 15 silver scats in a marine tank. They look pretty cool.

My lfs actually sells them in thier fresh and salt tanks and offers to show people how to acclimate them into salt. really cool fish!!
