I have two gourami's, one is gold, and the other is red/gold striped. The gold one has been chasing the red/gold one around like crazy and nibbled away his tail... I took the gold one out for now...

The red/gold one seems to still be ok, and is eating/swimming.... think he will survive?

if its just his fin he will be fine... maybe put some stress coat in there.

Yes, just his back fin. I added stress coat last night... And since I removed the gold gourami from the tank the injured fish is more active.

Now what to do with this mis-behaving fish..

What size is the tank? You will probably need to give them their own separate territories.

I have a 55 Gallon tank.

Well if he is still eating and swimming I guess he will be fine. Maybe you should return the aggressive gourami or if you have two tanks than just separate them.

Sounds like you have two males, there - and one is an aggressive one. Even in a 55G tank, putting two male Gouramis together can spell trouble.

Do you have the tank planted out and decorated enough to where each fish can establish it's own territory? If not - this could be part of the problem. Also - what about tank mates? Are there other fish in the tank with them?

Personally, I would return the aggressive one. Aggressive fish rarely "play nice" - and so much of it seems to be down to the individual fish rather than the species (although granted some species are inherently nasty). We had to do this with one of our Dwarf Puffers when we got our first two - we thought we got a male and a female - but it turns out we had got one regular-sized male and one GINORMOUS male who claimed the whole tank as his own. The big one had to go back, and we got a definite female the next time round.

If you are really determined to have more than one Gourami (BTW are they Dwarf Gourami??), you should seriously consider learning how to identify females versus males. If you can find a fish store that has some females in with the male Gouramis, it might be worth keeping the less-aggressive male, and putting in a couple of females with him.

I have 4 dwarf gouramis all about the same size in a 40 breeder tank. All male...that's all they sell around me. I have plenty of hiding places and plants. They don't chase each other around and there are no nipped fins ever. They do a little posturing once in a while and then they swim away from each other but that is all. Now I do imagine that if I didn't have all the plants and hiding places it might be an entirely different story.

At first whenever I put new fish in my Gourami usually Harasses them for about the first 3 hours they are new in the tank chasing them all over the tank and nipping at them and then he leaves everybody alone after a while sometimes I feed him when I put new fish in that usually calms him down the only fish he never messed with was when I put my Angel fish in

if its gold and not stripped its probably a trichogaster trichopterus which can be brutal towards dwarfs (my big opaline killed two dwarfs when he was young and about the same size as a full grown dwarf)
