I have just set up a 10 gal. tank and read that a dwarf gourami would be a good fish to start the cycle. He looked great when I bough him on the 21st, just 3 days ago. Since this morning I have noticed these 'worm' like things comming off his gill covering. The area where they attach is red and swollen. He seems to be breathing faster than he should. I need help as to what this is and how to treat it. I also have an African Dwarf Frog in the tank and he seems great. Gourami seems to be eating well. The ammonia this morning was around .25 and the nirtates and nitrites were nonexistant.

Maybe gill flukes? I'm not confident that a dwarf gourami is really a good choice for cycling. They are rather sensitive to water conditions, at least in my experience.

What is the best treatment for gill flukes? Do I need to treat just the fish or the tank? Is it possible for the frog to become infected, or will the treatment hurt him? I have read that salt is a good treatment. If so exactly how do I do this?

im not sure for the cure.....but if you read salt....go to walmart...or w/e local store that sells fish and buy some aquarium salt......for freshwater.....i bought some today for 2.30$....u add 1 teaspoon(5ml) per every 10gallons

Here is a really good article on gill flukes that might help you understand what they are, what they do, and how to get rid of them.
