So I was pecking around yahoo answers seeing what kinda crazy things people will give advice about and here is a response to a woman asking what she can buy, to put in her daughters 5 gallon tank. I think I had to pick my mouth off the floor for this one.
Answer---
Once filled, let the water heat, aireate and the filter run for a full 24 hours before introducing new fish. For the first occupancy, I'd suggest 1 small catfish to help keep the tank clean and to test the set up. They are sort of fragile, so if that lives past the first 24 hours you 'll know that the tank will support other fish. You can get a few guppies, and some Neons, and whatever else catches your eye at the fish store. Ask the worker there which are compatable with each other. When you get then home, place the plastic bags that they come in, fish and all, into the fish tank for an hour to let them adapt to the water temperature before releasing the fish. In a 5 gallon tank, you can keep up to 10 - 15 fish, if you get the right ones.

I actually watched someone shop by color at the Walmart fish department. It was really painful to watch, but at least she was sticking to small fish.
When she pointed to the Oscar I could no longer shut up.
"Those get really big (makes football-size motions with his hands) very quick and will eat all your other fish". She decided to pass on it.
Not sure it did any good though because chances are the oscar still ended up in a 10g tank elsewhere :/

Did you set them straight?
No, the post was from 2 years ago. There was someone who did though.

What was that person thinking?
I like AllExperts better, the people there actually know what they are talking about. There, the answers are good...its just the questions that get annoying. I can't believe some people actually do these things. I get questions every day relating to goldfish in bowls, and balas and oscars in 10g's.
Usually the SW section is a little more serious, but today someone asked me if clownfish's can be kept in bowls!

FAILURE...
...is all the can come to someone who follows that advice...
It is sad that she will most likely end up thinking the tropical fish hobby is too hard only because one person had to give off seriously bad advice. Bad advice is the most common way to make mistakes or even give up on an aquarium.

all experts is way better, ive answered about 50 saltwater questions, and ive only gotten one stupid question. It was a FW question and someone was wondering where the best place to get a platy was, and they listed like 10 stores, 5 that were probably local and non-chain. the only 2 i knew were petsmart and petco. i had to reject it because im in the saltwater section and i dont know individual stores conditions

Wow! That is terrible.
I would have to admit, 80 to 90% of the people on Y!A don't know what they're talking about. I like to tell them how to ACTUALLY care for fish! I hope it doesn't sound like I'm boasting, because
I'm gettin' like a million emails a day from people on Yahoo answers asking me all these questions. Though I try to answer all of them, perhaps I should direct some of the people to this forum?
Anyways, I suppose I'll end my novel now while you guys wake yourselves back up!!
Best regards,

Cocoa Pleco, even Allexperts is messed up. Sites like that only hold ways to fail. You should go to an aquarium forum such as this one for all of your information, as I do not know any 'so called experts' here.
Sorry. Recruiting people from this site to your site is sooooooooo not allowed. Anymore posts even sounding like it will be deleted. It's one of our forum rules. A suggestion I have for the AC staff would be to change the rule to 'not mentioning the name of the site you are reffering to/keeping the site anonymous, if you start a thread like this one.' I am not trying to argue with you at all, just a suggestion that could improve AC.

Hey guys, I guess I didn't think about what I was typing, for it sure does sound like I am trying to "promote" Yahoo! Answers.
You can completely delete that post Ms. Hobbs, if you really think anything bad would happen. I just didn't think about what I was typing...
Once again, I will say sorry for my ignorance.

There's nothing wrong with suggesting a betta or some shrimp for a 5 gal, but that answer was wayyyyyy off base. I wouldn't say the answer should've been "nothing" though.
