I have just been looking at all the other fish photo threads and have seen some awesome looking fish, so I thought we could start our very own thread for Predatory fish.

If you have Bass, Bluegill, sunfish etc etc let's post them here in this thread.

I'll start.

Here's TC the largemouth bass.....(same as my avator)

My favorite fish are Lepisostieds (Gar)...right now i have 5 gar (4 of the 7 different species) in a 6' x 2' tank. My largest gar is about 4 years old and right around 18" now.

I have many other large predatory fish...most of which will be housed in a 375 or 500 gallon tank (havent decided which yet). I also have many community fish, but i mostly enjoy the preds!

Thanks for the kind words! :thumb:

I'm thinking of a GAR but I really only like the short nosed type do they get too large? What type of fish should go in a 90? I already have a wide array of predators maybe some bucktooth Tetra's? I really like the Chaka Chaka.
Sorry for the spelling can you believe I'm in school?

A Shortnose will grow somewhere between 18-24 inches and are VERY skittish. They are one of the most difficult of the gar species to keep and they do not do well with most tankmates.

I hate saying this but a 90gal. tank is not big enough for short nosed gar!
They need room to swim.200gal would be more appropriate.
Keep doing your research and find the right fish that can go with the fish you have now!:22:

This is true...with an adult Shorty. If you put a juvenile Shorty in a 200 gallon tank he would most likely be dead within days. They are very well known for darting accross the tank when spooked and slamming the glass...causing severe to fatal spinal injuries. With almost all gar species they should be raised in a "stepwise" fasion. Start them in a small, but not too small tank (while young) and upgrade the tank proportionally as they grow. This helps to avoid them slamming the glass, but still does not eliminate it. Either way...a Shortnose really is not a good gar for a beginner "garkeeper" and a 90 is too small for any adult gar species..

That makes sense! lol The last torpedo like fish I had was a ID shark and it committed suicide that way.At least thats what I think did it!
What if you were to put plants or other decor at the ends of the tank, would it slow them down?

Planting a tank never hurts with gar, but that still holds no guarantees. Shortnose and Longnose are the two species that most frequently do this. The other 5 species seem a little more durable (physically).

Just clicking around the site and saw the thread. Very beautiful fish everyone. Makes me jealous. I can't wait until I can get a nice big tank and house some of these monsters.
