View Full Version : My new rescues
Hey guys, just wanted to share with you the new members of my family... My friend is moving and she cant bring her hampsters, well I passed by her house, and she let them go out of the cage to die! So after a day of a lot of perswaision of my mom I was allowed to keep them :19: I dont have pics tho =( but I may be getting a new camera soon :18: , anyways the skinny one is grey with a racoon face, and the fat one is grey with a scar on his face, and a brown spot, and a racoon face... There so funny to watch to they climb on the cage upside down :hmm3grin2orange: and they never exersized, so when they got on the wheel I was so happy, well 4 AM I had enough of the wheel so I took it out :laugh1blue: So yeah a few questions for the hamster owners out there
Is the bedding a nesecity? I use ripped papers for padding and such...
Can they eat rabbit food?
and what do you feed yours?
ALSO I need some suggestions for names so....
First of all - congrats on persuading Mom to let you rescue the hamsters! :19:

I would say yes. Hamsters need to dig and nest and chew stuff up - or they're NOT happy. Buy aspen (NOT cedar - cedar contains toxic oils) shavings (cheap - especially if you buy a bale at a time - and good) and then splurge on some of that special fluffy hamster bedding. It's a tad expensive, but if you only give them a bit at a time it will last quite a while.
Can they eat rabbit food?
Yes - a bit won't hurt - but use hamster food as their staple. Provide them with lots of fresh foods as well - at least one fresh food daily - more when it's convenient (like when you're making a salad but BEFORE the dressing goes on). They're not huge water drinkers - but you must supply them with clean water at all times.
They are nocturnal - if they're in your room and the wheel bothers you - leave it in for the day - and then take it out before you go to bed (assuming a bedtime of 10-11 p.m.). Put it back in when you get up in the morning. They should still have enough time to get all the exercise they need.
i know nothing about hamsters but you should name one red and the other one severum :hmm3grin2orange:
Lol, And ty rue... Yes it has taken a while to persway my mother, but I did after a huge battle so anyways, the only thing about the padding expensive stuff, is that I was doing reasearch and if it is swallowed they wont digest it and it will block there digestive tract... But other then that, 3.00 for bedding and 2.00 for food, hmmm, that comes to 5.30...

Let's see for names --- are they male or female??:c12:
Oh sorry there both male and there brothers, ive thought about bandit for the skinny one, but im not 100% sure, dunno, theres a skinny one and fat one
EDIT: Another thing sorry, is there any way I could do a DIY cage, the one that she gave me is a little to small for them so I would rather them be comfortable....

ive never had hamsters, i dont even think they are in aus but anyways, if they are living together now with no problems whats the big deal?? id leave them together wouldnt want them to get lonely
It's because males usually fight. I would suggest a hamster ball for your hamster for it to get exercise and explore around your house.
Yes, hamsters fight. They're solitary.
But in this case, play it by ear. Sometimes (albeit rarely) 2 hamsters will coexist - so then you don't have to worry.
But should they start fighting you have to separate them. Once they start, they won't stop.
It is Garage Sale season! I'll bet you can find great hamster supplies for next to nothing. Just make sure you scrub and disinfect any supplies you get. A bleach solution should kill any germs...however, any dirt on the cage has to be scrubbed off thoroughly first before you bleach...

Great idea! I'll get a supersized one for my kid!
And of course, you should name them Mello and Cello.

Im not sure, the people are telling me that they will kill eachother!? Im not quite sure why but id rather not find blood all over the place one morning so
