Is it possible to overfeed fish? My fish get to the point where they swallow food, throw it up, and swallow it again out of instinct. I've only had them a week and they seem to be bigger and fat and thier zebra stripes and fins are much more defined. Is that normal?

They should take about 3-5 minutes to eat. If they are done before 3 minutes, give some more. If it takes longer than 5 minutes, feed less next time and net out any extra that they don't eat. Overfeeding can contribute to many problems. Most community fish should be fed at least 2 if not three or four small feeding a day. What food exactly are you feeding? Are they zebra danios? What all is in the tank?

Its just 4 glofish and a ghost shrimp. At the moment I feed them tetramin tropical flakes mostly and sometimes tetra freeze dried bloodworms. I used to feed them in the morning and when I get home from work but it seems that they wont eat all of it and it makes a mess at the bottom of the tank. I'm trying to feed them smaller quantities. I think it will take a really small amount to spread it out 3-4 times a day.

What size tank? What color glofish? I feed mine TetraMin Pro Crisps and Hikari Cichlid Gold baby. I would not feed freeze dried, they often lead to the fish refusing any other food. They are not that nutritionally beneficial anyways, so it's not like it's a huge loss to the diet.

Its 4 red glofish and a ghost shrimp in a 10 gal tank. I never heard of a fish refusing food before. I read that they like and eat bloodworms. I will cut back on the blood worms to maybe once or twice a month so that my fish don't get spoiled and so I don't feel like I wasted money on this small can of bloodworms :11: . Thanks for the advice. :thumb:

I know personally I haven't had problems with my fish rejecting other food. I have them on a normal schedule of where I feed them flakes in the morning and afternoon and before I shut the lights off, I feed them some frozen food, and I haven't had any problems so far. I think alot of it just depends on the fish and how picky they are.

Blood worms are given as a treat and not a meal. Only a very small amount (after they've already eaten is a good time) and only about 3 times a week.

You need to be careful with over feeding in a small tank. The water is condensed in small tanks and will get dirty fast.

At least for my African cichlids,
I give them bloodworms or frozen shrimp only once a month as a treat.

For all other feeding, I do not feed my fish more than once a day.
Whatever they can consume in about 3-5 mintues is all they need daily.

Than is only my opinion, and what was suggested to me by an African Cichlid breeder.
