View Full Version : Light Needed?
Now I have not upgraded to any special lighting yet, I do sometimes leave the blinds open for a few hours a day. I do plan on upgrading my lighting in a few months and trying some of the "ebay" special lighting like This ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.]) and see how it goes lol. Anyways I was wondering are there any types of anemons, featherdusters, sponges, corals that dont need really any special lighting (maybe a few hours of sunlight?) that I could get. I already have a few look like red mushrooms from the liverock I bought off a local guy. Any suggestions would be great thanks!

i would only do mushrooms in natural light, too many variables otherwise

FIY Odyssea/Jebo lights are cheap, but they are not UL listed. I have read posts of people reporting sloppy wiring, in some cases fires, for which, given the lack of basic UL listing, much less approval, you may or may not be covered.
I understand some people are fine with taking that chance, but I think it's something worth knowing before making the purchase.

anemones=most require intense light
featherdusters & sponges=the presence of light is not really an issue for these filter feeders
corals=sun corals, pseudocorynactis, certain gorgonians and perhaps some others have no photosynthetic requirements.

forgot to add this is my 260w PC, EXTREMELY solid build. I had it on my 55g reef for about 6 months til i upgraded to MH, but when i get my 90g going i will use the PC and MH together.

What were you able to keep with that light that is a great price? I just cant afford MH yet with being slow at work and a truck payment but that would be perfect if it will help me any. Also are the bulb replacable with ones from a local store? I'd hate to have to order new bulbs from them everytime

PC Lighting can do most soft corals, and things like Feathers don't really have a lighting requirement due to the fact they are actually worms. For sure you can do some Anenomies, mushrooms,... can't think of other soft corals but yes they are all ok under the PC lighting, best thing to do is keep them mid to top level of the tank if the tank is very deep.
You should be able to find replacement bulbs pretty easy at any LFS espcially if they are selling Marine fish. If not you can always order online at big als. Not that I would be promotiing them over anyone else.. best thing you can do is shop around for the best price.

The other thing you would be able to keep at that lighting is certain LPS like Frogspawn, Torches, Candy Canes, and Hammers. Those corals have a lower light requirement than some Soft corals. There are some soft corals that need high light, but for the most part they are fine with PC.

anthelia mid level, toadstool leather up top, kenya trees and zoas mid level, mushroom near bottom, brain near bottom, green galaxia towards the top, fuzzy leather near the bottom. i have more corals but those are the main ones. all looked far better under MH
MH isnt pricey, i got my 150w brand new off ebay for $150. the seller is "fishneedit". comes with sleek pendent, ballast, and choice of bulb
and yep, the PC is a good price, name brand 26ow PC can go for $300, but this one is just as good. there are sellers that sell 4x65w bulbs for $20-$40, but most LFS have them too
