View Full Version : Question on lighting for my 30 gallon...

I have a 30 gallon shell dweller tank with anubias...I just have a 20w on the whole tank so my LFS guy sold me two ~18 inch fixtures and bulbs for 5 bucks a pop :). Both contain 18w dual daylight bulbs. However, one contains two 11,000k and the other one contains something like 7100k. When I span them across the 7100 is on one side of the tank and the 11,000k is on the other. I am keeping the 20w and fixture in the back and putting the two 18w dual daylights end-to-end in the front part of my lid. Should I change the 7100 spectrum light to another 11,000 since I have my 20w coralife light in the back? Another question is because of my 20 watt being much weaker than the two dual-bulb 18 watts should I put them in the back and the 20 in the front. 56 watts on a 30 is pretty good eh? Or should I pitch the 20 and just use the two 18 fixtures? I know ideally I should have 1 36" fixture instead of two 18's but 5 bucks is 5 bucks...here's a pick so you can help me figure this out

I got a little confused with all your lighting, but Anubias doesn't require that much light. I think your two 18s should suffice. Total is about 1.2 WPG with the 2 18s. If you can keep the spectrum (k) consistent that would be ideal.
Start with that and give it a couple of weeks. Make sure your plants look healthy (Anubias grow slow and you have low light, so you probably won't see too much growth). If your plants start looking bad you can try to add the other bulb.
I really don't think you'll need much though if you just plan on keeping Anubias. Just my thoughts. Sorry if I misread some stuff. Nice tank by the way... I notice that one of your leaves looks a little yellow. Try some trace mix like Flourish trace, just to give the plants a little boost.

Yeah, I use leaf zone for trace. One of my anubia was bad and one had some yellow on it. I did good with the 20w for a while and know it is a low light plant. That is why I brought up the toss out the 20w in the equation question. Will I be good with two 11000 because one side of the tank is yellow light spectrum 7100 and the other is bright white 11,000? I would rather it be uniform rather than two tone...not aesthetically pleasing at all.

In regards to the temp... In the end it's all about asthetics and how the light looks. Of course it's usually recommended to try and keep a range of 6700-10000k for plants. But this is only because anything greater than 10000k will not add any additional benefits and those higher k lights can be a bit more expensive (usually for reef stuff). However, 11000k will still be fine and hey, like you say, 5 bucks is 5 bucks!
So yeah, the different spectrums on each side just depends on your tastes, which like most people I know, would want to keep things uniform on both sides. It shouldn't hurt anything though.
Hey, Pasadena... I'm down south of you. I live in El Monte. Great to see another SoCal person on the AC!

Yeah, I've been in SoCal for about 3 years now...We have awesome fish and plants around here. I've lived in all four corners of the nation but the sun shining all the time here is great. I wish it was as green as the NW and it would be perfect. but I cannot deny that I am Satisfied...
