Rubbermouth camouflage

Our rubbermouth will show fairly large white spots along his back only when he is on the gravel or driftwood, but when he is on the glass, they disappear. Could this be a form of camouflage he is using?

Some Pleco's are known for their color changing abilities - especially the L168 - I have never heard of the rubbermouth being able to do so though...are you sure it's a rubbermouth?
