That's an Asian Arowana, Scleropages species, not a South American fish. The Asian fish is rare outside of Asia as it has almost a mythical status as 'the dragon fish'. It's rare in nature these days, thus the high price for a specimen, especially sold outside of SE Asia.
Believe it or not, but the deep red and bronze examples of that fish can command easily 10 times that price.

ive seen some special arowanas go for $3000 (£1502) here. last one i saw on a ad was a 24k arowana i think. i almost bought a 20" silver arowana for only $100 a few months ago, but im out of room

That is CHEAP!!!! I would buy that in a heart beat!

I can't find an asian arowana here for under $1000 unless I want to get a lower quality green or blue-green. There is a blood red here for $3500. Great deal too for that quality fish.
