Hello and and Thanks for your help.

My 2 gold fish are about 18 months old and were doing great until 24 hours ago.

They are the only 2 fish in a 45 gallon tank.

This morning they are very bloated. They look FAT.

There is one comet tail and one fan tail. The comet tail is just about dead.
I put the fan tail in a triage tank but she doesn't look any better.

Can you help with any ideas? The tank water tested very clean. I only feed them standard flakes.

We had terrible weather here. Our power was out for 2 days. I had their filter on a battery back-up.
But ther still had two 6 hours sessions where the filter wasn't running.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try and feed em some peas without the shells on, and do 50% water changes every 3days, good luck

your diet for your fish may also be a problem as they need more than flakes, your power cut should not have affected them as you have your back up on,its good that your water tested clean,
how often do you feed your fish?
my suggestion would be to feed peas as suggested only a few and do not feed your fish anything else there possibly constipated,
keep checking there poo if its white you have an internal bacteria which needs to be treated this can also sometimes cause fattiness,

I feed them twice a day. Maybe 10 flakes each. They are both about 5 inches long tip of nose to end of tail.

What else should I be feeding them?

vegtables such as cucumber, zucchini peas this keeps the bowels moving,i think you can also feed certain friuts such as orange, watermelon(do not leave these in the tank for long!!!) pellet food, bloodworm (frozen) bread, dried river shrimp, theres a lot you can feed
feeding them twice a day is fine just feed them enough that they can eat in 5mins,

I agree with the rest of the members, a varied diet is probably the best for fish, could you imagine living on bread and soup for your whole life, and imagine the nutrients you wouldnt have in the diet....

BTW what brand of foood?

Do they look sort of like pine cones with scales sticking out? If so then they have dropsy which is not fun to deal with. I would try to get them a high quality pellet food like hikari or new life spectrum. If they are floating or at the bottom of the tank and can't get up or back down then they have a swim bladder issue. Pop frozen peas out of their shells and feed them that and it will help to clear their intestines out. Good luck!

TetraFin Goldfish Flakes are the only thing I have been
feeding them.

It says "Balanced Nutrition with ProCare" on the label.

sometimes or most times natural food benifits your fish:19:

It doesn't look like dropsy as you describe it. The simply look
Inflated.

I gave them the shelled peas about 45 minutes ago.

I guess your problem is solved! Peas work wonders.
Introduce some veggies into their diet and they will be great.
I know that goldfish like to eat duckweed and its cheap and grows really fast, not sure how nutritious it is

Thanks for the pea info.

What she passed wasn't wiggling so I hope thats all it was.

One section of it was a bright color when it first came out. I thought it
might be blood.

Looks like plain constipation to me.

If I can suggest, get specialized gold fish food. Goldfish, usually needs plenty of fibres from vegetable matter in their diet compared with other fish. Feeding vegetables are also a good idea, as suggested. Also, is possible that you could find a pelleted or granule version. Flakes are not the most desirable food, especially for larger fish.

Check out the thread I posted on Goldfish. It has a lot of information on many aspects of keeping them.

Dropsy can be just swelling, does not always include pineconing.

What is the nitrate concentration?
