What size tanks are your betta's in....Betta is like other fishes they do need proper big tank with plants or some decorations as hiding places and filters and heaters.

Which part of aus do u live in?? in Sydney the current average temp is around 17 degrees celsius, and since betta live in a tropical condition therefore heater is a "MUST". Most Lfs have relatively warm temperature inside, due to their central heating air-conditioner.

Were they active before they died, or sluggish?

i dont know, i recently lost my white male due to stress. my 1 yr old son kept trying to catch him with the tiny fish net (even though i told him more than once not to do it!!!!). so are they getting stressed by anything?

How long have you had them! They each only last about a year. Most are a little old by the time you buy them!

A quick internet search of "betta splendens lifespan" suggests that most live more than a year, Ghostknife.

Fair enough, but I can only go off my experience, & what I have heard.

Maybe bad info on my part.

Nick, I'm with you on this one. 1-2 years would probably be about right. Like you say, you don't know the age when you get them either.

Nick suggested 2-5 years, not 1-2. I gave advice which I had read from somewhere else, experiences etc. You're right, you don't know what age they are when you get them. But everyone I know must have bought them when they were alot older than you bought yours! I am not saying I am wrong on this one. They are my experiences!!

They are lmost never very old when you buy them. They want to sell them as young as possible as it cost money to keep and feed them. If you buy them in a fish store they will live for several years given the proper care.

This is of course provided that it is high quality Bettas and perhaps you have had bad luck Ghostknife and bought low quality Betta as that might effect their lifespan.

Yep.
As well as the above, people here have had Bettas for 4-5 years...for example, SkarloeysMom had Skarloey for over 4 years, which would certainly put him at being at 4 1/2 years at death...

Well, I have had my guy for just over a year and he is doing very well.
Not sure what to suggest with yours.
