They grow very very fast. You can keep them with an oscar provided you have a large enough tank (over 1000g, at least)

no pacus need huge tanks and no body will take them when they are big

They do fine with Oscars, however they are not predatory fish, they very much prefer a mainly herbivorous diet with some frozen meaty foods included. They do grow very quickly given the proper space. I worked at PetSmart for 3 months and we got in a couple of 2" Pacu while I was there, within 2 months they had grown to be 4" long. If you don't have a very very large tank already, don't bother with them.

yep, theyre not predatory, theyre herbivores, in the wild they eat fallen fruits and brazil nuts

theyre fine with oscars, mine bonded with my oscar. they grow fast though, i bought mine as a baby at about 4" in october, and now hes at 13". as long as you can commit to a monster (1000g+) tank in the future, its alright

my other small one is about 7" now, and i bought him about 5 months ago at 2", he was at petsmart with like 20 other pacu in a tiny tank, and he had fin rot and bad scrapes allover

That about sums it up...

if properly raised they can easily reach 20+ inches in two years or less. Mine gets along with most everything...they are a very friendly and personable fish. If you forsee yourself having the time and cash for a huge tank i would highly recommend them.

Yeah, I would have to back up what the above have stated but also there have been reports that in a tank with large amounts of pacus and piranhas (this would be on the order of several thousand gallons, mind you) that the Pacus, killed and ate the piranhas. Yes that's right ate them. I also know they are tank breakers but other than that they are cool fish. Heck, I would want one if I had the means to do so.

When I see pacus being sold at LFS's, they're usually small (2"-3") and the tank is FULL of them.

Based on their rapid rate of growth, what do LFS's do with pacu's that aren't sold? The only one's I've seen larger than 3" were 20yrs old, not for sale and in the LFS's display tank (and about the size of tires).

I wonder if the small ones are being replaced at the rate that they're constantly being sold at. I've never seen them at 4"-9" for example (but that might just be in my area).

This thread is old but i agree with kaybee... i see pacus (wish i didn't) but never big. Sometimes i will see a returned one and those sometimes are big

I think they may die off or for some reason be killed before they get too large. Most people probably would be put off by the large size of the fish if it were to be on sale.
