This fish was given to me awhile back and he/she has grown to be a beauty as you can see for yourself!! This fish is by far my favorite -- what a personality!! I swear he/she poses for the camera!! I have been told it is a kenyi -- would like to have that verified if anyone can!!!

I have another one that I have been told is a kenyi -- will post a couple of pictures to get your opinion on that one

thanks

I'm not a cichlid buff but the first one looks kind of like a peacock and the second one looks very much like a kenyi to me.

The first fish is not a kenyi. On 5-18-2008 you started a thread titled "Can anyone help me ID this fish" and posted this fish in that thread too. I took your pictures of it to some cichlid experts and posted back to you that it is a hybrid and what they believed the mixes to be. If you can't remember check that thread back out. It is a pretty fish though.

The second fish, if it is a kenyi, is a poor quality one...if not a hybrid cross. The bars aren't right and it shouldn't have any yellow on it unless it is a male and turning male colored (all yellow). Hope this helps.

I'm no expert, but I'd say the first one definitely isn't a kenyi. I don't know what else the second one could be besides a kenyi. Either way, nice fish...

Give the second one some time to see what's going on with that yellow. Desirable kenyi should have 5 nice straight bars. It's possible it's just a not so great quality kenyi and turning male colored. Real good quality fish are next to impossible to find in the LFSs around me.

I agree with you Mike if the fish are only for your enjoyment and not to be breed and the fry sold or distributed. If more people would adhear to that way of thinking, I might have a better chance at purchasing good quality fish locally. Eventually I would like to have fine specimens of the species I choose to keep but unless I order online I'm stuck with poor quality which sometimes also means poor health in fish too and that makes me sad. Even hybrid mixes can be beautiful fish as proved in the first pic posted and I wouldn't mind a tankfull of hybrids if they were that pretty either but they would be just for show. Sometimes I want pure good quality strains. Especially if I want them for breeding.

That first fish is awesome looking! It looks like it's an OB mbuna cross but with what I don't have a clue.

The second fish I would say is a poorly bred kenyi due to the irregular barring. Kenyi should have 5 regularly spaced bars, though it's getting really hard to find any like this anymore. I would also say it's a young male, the yellow hints along the gills and on the head give it away. It's really cool watching them switch colors, it's so interesting that the fish can look yellow from one angle and blue from another.

I had a kenyi I thought was female start fading some then turning yellow. I soon took it back to the LFS because I already had one male and figured 2 would be trouble.

Kinda wish I would have kept it now. It did have nice bars (something that's rare around here) and it was a real pretty color combo going through the change. I have what turned out to be 2 male auratus that do ok together so maybe the kenyi would have too. At least for a while lol.
