My 5.5 gallon only has a male betta and I was thinking about getting some kind of algae eater to keep any algae from starting or getting to far gone. I was thinking about the bulldog pleco like I have in the 29 gal. but I figure they get to big, next would be the otto's---if I got otto's how many could I safely get for the tank, any other suggestions would also be nice.

My betta did not like shrimp. You could always try otos. Just remember to supplement him with fresh veggies from time to time. Good luck.

You could get some snails or amano shrimp.

Yuhp you cant fit a Pleco. And yea your Betta might not like shrimp or he could like them in the wrong way. I'd go with snails. A male Betta and a pack of Otos seems too much for a 5g.

Snails are probably your safest bet. Otos might works and you could probably fit 3-4 in there.

I'm not sure if I would put 3-4 otos in a 5.5 gallon tank. I only had two in my 10g, and they cleaned it spic and span in no time, so a 5.5g would be difficult to support 3 otos. You can MAYBE do 2, but that's supplementing their diet with veggies and such. They may be small fish, but they need the vegetation to live, and 3 in a 5.5g would not be able to provide that for them, I'm afraid.

Just my 2 cents.

It's sure that the algae in a 5.5 wouldn't be enough, but even with algae you should be supplementing with veggies. The reason I recommended more was that otos are gregarious, so getting at least a small group is best for them in the long run.

ottos like groups so no less than 4 i'd say.

I'm sorry, I guess I wasn't very clear with what I was saying. I know that their diet should be supplemented regardless, but I just have a hard time seeing 4 in a 5.5g. If it works, though, it works! :)
