Where did most of the profiles and articles on the site come from? It just seems like a lot more than I would expect to come from just forum members.

William does the articles. By profiles, do you mean the member list? Most of them aren't here and are old members from the old site or those that only registered and never posted.

No, the profiles in the Tropical Fish Species link under the menu to the left of the page.

I believe William and the site has put these all together.
