And I emphasize "cheap.' I used my sons camera when he was here this week and it took good pics but it wouldn't let me get very close to the fish. I want something that I can get good close ups. I have a Dell computer and guess they'd all be compatible with that?

Try checking out these websites....and there are several more like it, just search for camera reviews/comparisons or some such topic. I used both when researching my camera purchase last Christmas and was both flabbergasted and pleased with all there was to learn and compare!

Just an FYI....I love my kodak 740...has great auto settings for point and shoot, and the ability to change settings if I can ever get good at it for various types of shots. Macro is good, as is the fact that it has a large optical zoom rating for getting my daughter's baseball pics too! My personal opinion would be to stay away from HP cameras....I hated mine and know several others that didn't really care for theirs. Everyone I know with a Kodak is pleased with it. Hp does make great printers though :)

I agree here with the kodak, I have 3 cameras, 1 10mp megxon, 1 5.5 mp premier, and a 2mp kodak cx4200, the 1st 2 I mention are good cameras but when I went to take detailed pics for your comps I found there limitations, I recently drug the kodak out to see if the closeup pic quality was any better and was amazed, you see most cheapies have a plastic lens, whereas the more known brands like kodak usualy have a glass lens, you would probably pick up a good secondhand 2-3 megapixel kodak at a fraction of the cost of a higher mp cheapie, as an example I have included a medioca pic taken about 6 inch from glass with the kodak, (I am saving the better ones for POTM LOL), I am sure u will agree if you look at my other pics I have in the comps taken with the cheapie there is no comarison, or compare it to the pic in my post albino convict, it was taken with the 10mp megxon on full resolution.

The attatched photo here was taken at 2mp or 1632x1232 pixels and resized to 400x302 pixels

Very nice. The camera of my sons I just used this week was a HP and I couldn't get close up shots. The flash had to be so many feet away before it would take a shot. My home camera is like that but I'd like a digital that can take the close ups.

Hobbs-

Just saw a commercial for the Canon PowerShot for $200 at Circuit City. I don't know the model # or how many megapixels it takes. I have the Canon PowerShot A20, 2.1 MP. It takes fairly descent photos.

Top pick cameras for 2006.

Depending on what site you go to, they all have what they claim are the best list of cameras. I don't need the best. Just something that will shoot nice clear close-ups. The less buttons to play with, the better.

Did you try the comparison links I gave you, or any other for that matter? They allow you to choose different features you want on a camera...make, macro, price range, size of camera, zoom etc to narrow it down to the different makes and models that fit within your parameters and you can research from there. I highly recommend shopping around at the stores and trying out the cameras they have on display. If you know anyone with a digital that would let you "borrow" their memory card, most cameras take the standard and it would allow you to practise with the cameras on display that don't have internal memory.
