View Full Version : High ammonia...
Mmmk, sorry, well I have had a lot of trouble with ammonia since I had switched to sand... It has been cloudy and horrible, I do my weekly 25% water change and everything, it just isnt working out, my filter is fine, the only thing im worried about is the feeding habbits, I do not feed the fish because the tank is at my grandmothers house and im only there on saturdays, I plan on moving the tank when we buy our house in howell, but anyways, can anyone help?

Gotta ask a few Q's first
How long ago did you switch to sand?
What are your other water parameters?
Does she overfeed often? A good amount is enough that can be eaten in about 1 minute with no residual in the tank
mmmk, I switched to sand on May 3rd, my other water parameters are, .8-1 ammonia, .3-6 nitrite .2-4 nitrate and 7.5 Ph
I think she does overfeed some times, she always complains that they look so hungry, and will a diverse fish community I have to feed all types of differnt food, I told her not to feed a little bit day and night, but I still this she thinks there hungry lol inoccent grandma =|

Sounds like its a mini-cycle from changing the substrate. Monitor the levels and waterchange if A or NI get above 1.0, and try to convince the Gma to feed a little less often if you can
Mmk, yeah ive been trying... Sorry one more question about the corey that you anwsered on, er its still not doing good its all all white and hardly breathing

Oh okay, i didnt realize you were the same person at first. Is the cory in the same tank you just mentioned? If so maybe WC stuff down to .5 would be more helpfull, corys are more senstive to bad conditions because they dont have any scales
yeah Thats what I was thinking, I was thingking of doing a 50% water change to try and get rid of a lot

Do more, smaller changes instead of large ones, that way you wont slow down the cycle or change the conditions on the fish too quickly

mmk, so around 25% then?
Yea do 25%, check levels, repeat as needed over the course of the day
Mmk ill be doing tha tnow
Mmmk, I did the first water change, and its a lot clearer, im going to try to do another one around four, Im debating on whether to get a pleco to clean the walls, yes I know plecos dont have enough room in a 10g tank, BUT, Im buying a 55 gallon soon with my birthday money

Actually plecos will outgrow the 55 as well, you need at least 75 gallons, they can grow to 2 feet almost
Eh crud, is there any good "Wall sucking fish" I know of ottos and chinease algea eaters, but im not sure what one to get, the coreys dont do walls so...

There are other species of plecos that dont grow so large, like BN Plecos, you could go in that direction
mmk, ill see if petco sells them, I highly dought it tho, but if they dont, what should I go with chinese algea eaters or ottos?
mmk, ive decided to go with ottos.

I wouldn't add anything til your levels are good again. Especially otos, they can be quite sensitive.

the coreys dont do walls
I know how they feel I don't do windows!!! Sorry I had to I couldn't resist!!!
I have a Hillstream loach and they do the tank walls and anything they can suck on! The do need a bit of a current in the tank but I have mine in a 10G and he is loving it.

Hm loach intresting never heard of it, anyways, my levels are back to normal, I did some water changes and added some bio-spira filter packs in and it really cleared it up.
