I am getting 12 red cherry shrimps on Tuesday, Im so excited :19:
Ive done quite a bit of research on these guys because I have wanted them for a long time, but any tips from shrimp owners would be greatly appreciated.
They are going in a 10g with 2 wimpy platies lol. I want to pick up some easy plants for that tank today, any suggestions that shrimp like?
Thanks!

lots of java moss for them to hide in. The platys may be a problem

Congrats on the shrimp! You'll love them. :) I second the java moss. Mine practically live in the java moss 24/7.

If your intention is to breed the shrimp, I wouldnt put any fish capable of eating baby shrimp in your tank.

Ok thanks I will get some Java Moss for them.
Maybe these 2 platies will have to go back in the community tank then, they are just such wimps lol....they are even afraid of fry less than half their size. Im starting to wonder if thre is something psychologically wrong with them! They are both black and white platies, bought at the same time. Because they are like this I dont want to breed them.
My friend has an empty 5 gallon I gave him with a Betta, the Betta died so maybe I can see if he wants to sell it back to me for the 2 platys.
Im so excited!! :11:

If you gave it to him I doubt you would have to "buy" it back. Unless he is just cruel.

It would be wrong to ask for the tank back without offering something for it. It was a gift, not a loan. If he's a decent guy and he's not using it he will probably not accept any payment but it would be discourteous not to offer.

Java fern would be a good idea because it is cheap, and it tolerates low light levels.

havnt gotten plants yet...I saw some Java Fern but it looked dying and they wanted 6.99 for it? Is that a normal price fr a java fern?

That's an average price here I think. They way overcharge for plants, it's rediculous. IMO Java Ferns never look completely healthy, strange plants they are.

Where I got my java fern, they sold them for $2.99. $6.99 is way too overpriced for a java fern.

I have a little bit of java moss, but mine seem to prefer running around in craggy rocks and on driftwood.

What is in their tank right now is

10 gallon with
Hydro sponge filter
50 watt heater
2 tall fake plants
blue gravel with a pile of dark blue glass rocks in one corner
20-25 2 day old guppy fry

The shrimp are starting to get a bit of colour, and one or 2 of them molted yesterday.
Im gonna wait and see if I can find someone from the local aquarium society who will trade some young mollies for plants.

Update - My shrimps are doing great, I have seen at least 4 or 5 moults already. The biggest female is very bright red now, the big males are clear with some reddish brown. Some smaller females are starting to get more red.
Ive been feeding them HBH fry food, and tiny pieces of algae wafer.
Any suggestions on what else I should feed them?
No moss yet unfortunately but they have a bunch of bamboo in there and they love to sit on top of the stems and pick at them.

I feed them algae wafers too and, ironically, shrimp pellets. They should eat soft vegetables as well, but remainders of these and the pellets should be removed.

I was thinking about giving them shrimp pellets but it seemed a little weird lol.
I will try that, thanks.
