uh-oh. Is there anything that he could possibly be scraping on? Something with a jagged edge? What are your water parameters? Do you have any other fish with him?
A lot of questions, but it will help us to understand what might be happening.

he's in a small bowl all his own, there is a plastic cave in his bowl that may be scraping but i sort of noticed it when i first brought him home but never really payed much attention....i did use bottled water for his bowl but i haven't tested his water, i have used cycle in his bowl as well as aqua plus to reduce stress and put a slime coat on him. although the lady at the petcetera really didn't explain how much exactly to use, she said one small drop for a one gallon bowl, which he is in. one the bottle it says 5 ml for a 10 US gallon, and his bowl is WAY smaller. He does seem to be MUCH happier now since i have been doing frequent water changes and moved his bowl from beside the window( could a temperature chamge affect his scales). he is swimming happily and hides underneath his cave. Just an after thought, if he can see my other pet ( a gecko) through the bowl will he get over stressed? the both acknowledge each other but the just swims up the side of the bowl then does his own thing. Sorry for the entire book, But your help is GREATLY appreciated. I am definatly getting the hang of determining which is a normal behavior and which is odd.

Water changes should definately improve his well being. No fish likes to be in dirty water. Hope he improves soon. One or two drops of declorinator is plenty for the amount of water you are using.
