How To: Remove Glass Lid Ledges Off Tank!

I'm looking at getting a hang on filter for my fish tank but the problem is that I have ledges around the top of the tank for the glass lids to sit on. I have a hood now so I don't need the ledges anymore. What I want to know is how do I take the ledges off without breaking the tank? They're held on by silicone and are pretty flimsy, it's not the best quality tank.

Those are braces that secure the glass against the force of the water. They stay on.

If your tank is made like 99% of the tanks made and is not some tank with euro bracing a hob filter should fit over the lip easily.

It's a 22mm gap between the outside edge of the glass to the the inside edge of the ledge.

take a picture of your tank. I think you might have an acrylic splash guard.

Hay i know what your on about ive had the same problem when i got my fluval 305, what i did is i used a thin sharp standly knife and cut the mastic about 6'' along the glass shelf then i used some plyers held them in place at the end of my cut shelf then lifted the 6'' cut peace up and it snaped clean off, done the same thing on each end for intake outlet!

I had this same problem, I bought a aquaclear HOB and the ledge was to big. I was able to cut the ledge with a small saw.

I'm having a hard time picturing this...is the brace on the outside? I know my glass/plastic hood on my 29g has a little lip on the inside for it to sit...but the HOB still has plenty of room to fit over that.

a picture would be great just so i know what to look for from now on..
