Me again!! LOL I hope I am not becoming a pain!! If I am - I am truly sorry, :18: but no nothing about bettas and am trying to learn to help my bf with his. He is having a wonderful time with them and I really want him to be successful and learn as much as we can.
We have read a bit about males making bubble nests -- what is that? When do they do that?
Don't worry we are not looking to do any breeding -- just learning at this point!!
again thanks
You aren't being a pain, you are learning!
Bettas make their bubble nests when they are ready to breed. A bubble nest is a floating "pile" or group of small bubbles that he makes. It is in the nest that the eggs would be placed.

What---They use a saliva like substance to make air bubbles that stay. It starts out as little tiny pin hole bubbles scattered all over the tank, then becomes larger and more confined, usually to one corner of the tank, then spread out as far as they'd like.
When---It really depends on the individual fish and the conditions of the tank. I have one betta, puffin who builds a nest every month, same time, for a week off and on. Then I have another betta, heinz who has not built a bubble nest but once, when I transfered him from his retail cup into a temporary bowl, until his permanent tank got finished. I have had him since last year and he hasn't built one in the big tank. One consideration though is that there cannot be too much current in the water. The bubbles are pretty fragile. They do their job of holding the eggs, but can be destroyed pretty easily.

Good then the boys are happy!! WE are still trying to figure out a name for them -- we put out a poll -- the last i checked -- Felix and Oscar were in the lead!! Thelma and Louise seem to be doing great -- they are eating great and i think I saw Thelma wink at one of the boys thru the tanks across the way!! What a group!! LOL:hmm3grin2orange:

On the side note, for breeding purposes it is recommended to place a sliced styrofoam cup and leave it to float. Looked like this [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
Generally betta's will built their nest there, and the advantages are; the surface of the styrofoam cup allows the egg to stick on it, higher chance of survival rate, and minimize disturbance for instance water droplets due to evaporation.
hope that helps.

I had just read that about an hour ago!! I never would have thought of that. We won't be doing any breeding for awhile -- we need more equipment as well as do more research. We wanna do it right and have success!! I have gotten so much info here from all of you -- it is great!!
Thanks to all:19:

If the male is sitting next to a female, then it means he is ready to breed. It could also mean that he is happy. Either way, happiness is usually the factor. Keep up the good work. Bubblenests are a good sign. =]]
