Is it good for south american cichlids? The formula seems to be focused more on african cichlids. I have Rams and would like to try feeding them this stuff, has anyone? Also, is a 5 pound bucket of it for $50 plus shipping a good price?

Check the ingredients of the NLS Cichlid with another NLS item. If they are similar, and I bet they are, use it. I seriously doubt it'd have any deleterious effect on the Rams. I use regular NLS with my SA dwarf Cichlids, and have for years.

It will be fine. The formulas don't vary much if at all.

Almost all the NLS formulas are the same. All you have to pay attention to is whether it floats or sinks and the size of the pellet.

A 5 pound bucket is quite a lot of food, particularly for a couple small tanks. I bought 1 pound, and keep most of it in the freezer. I have 7 tanks running, from 10 to a couple 55's, mostly African and CA cichlids. Even the Endler's and L333's eat the NLS as a regular part of their diet, and they're all thriving.

The bucket is a great investment. It is about two gallons. Mine has lasted me abotu 6 months or more now. It will last, just stick it in the fridge. I get mine for about $35 or so from my work with my discount.

I have like a 300g container and it is still almost full after 6 months! This stuff lasts a while.

Ok so 5lbs is way too much for me considering I only have 2 small tanks. I may opt for a pound of it, $30 shipped though. I can get 5lbs of it shipped to me for $70 even. I could sell some of it to locals if I got the 5lbs.

5 lbs is a lot. Remember with any good quality food you dont need much to get great results and that goes for NLS and Hikari.

NLS is a very good staple food, but I also feed HBH flakes, spirulina flakes, FD krill, frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. Variety is also important, as much as for it's own sake as for giving the fish a well-rounded diet. Whatever your favorite food, would you enjoy eating it every day for months/years?

The point is as you said, a well-rounded diet, complete and balanced. NLS does this. I have not found a single other food that does. It is even better than lots of variety. Please read the article I wrote on it as well as the nutrition article on their site and watch the video on their site.

They do not need variety. It is not a nutrient. It is not a carb, lipid, or protein. It is not a micronutrient or trace element. It is the classic way of trying to get the best diet possible.

You CANNOT compare our diet to a fish's. We have become used to the most varied diet ever. Not only do we eat almost anything from nature, but we mix it up and even add chemicals to make it even more varied. Fish are creatures of habit. That is why it is hard to get many of them to switch diets.

Try NLS as the only food for four months. In almost every case you will see an improvement. If you have not done this you CANNOT say that it is not the best diet for your fish because you have not tried it on your fish. Debating by using theoretical principles dies in the face of tried and true facts. The tried and true facts are that NLS exceeds almost every single other diet out there. Varied prepared, varied 'natural' foods, varied live, a varied mix of everything, etc.

FishGuy2727, where can I find your articles? I'd like to read them.

I'm definitely getting some of this NLS, just shopping around for whats cheaper and what will last me a good number of months. Maybe a 300g tub off ebay? It comes up to $35 shipped. I can get a pound shipped to me for $30 from a guy I met through eBay so I think I will do that instead.

Will the NLS "growth" .5mm pellets be good for small fish like Tetras and Danios?

Absolutely! That's actually exactly what I use for my smaller fish.

The article I wrote is in my blog. Their site (nlsfishfood.com) has the nutrition article, video, and testimonials (as well as a fish food forum specific to NLS).

NLS will be fine for your South and Central American Cichlids. Depending on the formulation you use, we generally charge less than $50 for the 5lb. pail. You can see our current pricing at MondoAquatics New Life Spectrum Foods (http://www.mondoaquatics.com/NewLifeSpectrumFoods.html)
