Last week I made a enquiry regarding the import of Red Cherry Shrimps into South Africa. I already had the picture in my mind of an aquarium full of shrimps.....until the dept of environment burst my bubble.
After a lot of calls and emails, I finally received an official reply regarding the refusal for import permits.
Here is a extract of the reply.
"Your query was referred to different specialists in Alien and Invasive Species and the following response has been prepared;
1. The status quo is that the approved legislation to guide the management of these imports, especially exemptions of those species that are less problematic 2. There is a series of workshops currently being held around the country in quest to have an acceptable legislative framework in place 3. A risk assessment is required for every import species with invasive potential 4. The species have an invasive potential and therefore you will need to commission a risk analysis study to determine the extent of risks involved with bringing in this species 5. Your company will bear the costs of the removal of the alien species if they become invasive and this agreement will be formally entered into."
Is there any other members that had the same problem?
