I'm wondering if it is even possible to have a nano 5g. I'm thinking just Live Rock and Invertibrates. Would that type of stocking even work in a 5g? Thanks for your opinions.

its possible, but alot of work. its best to start off with a 55g, bare minimum 20g. a 5g should be left to people with a bit of experience.

I have heard of people trying sw in the Eclipse 6g system. You can only have one fish, and it doesn't seem worth the trouble.
Try a 10 or 20g.

It is definitely possible, just not easy.
There are even certain species of gobies that would do fine in that size tank, if you knew how to arrange things and proper water quality.
I agree with cocoa, it is best to start out with a bigger tank. 55g is the ideal starting size, but a 20 or 30 would work. Anything less than 30g you can't have more than a couple fish anyways, so unless you are mainly into inverts you're choices are very limited.
Contrary to popular belief, larger tanks are easier than smaller ones.

Just asking, because I should be acquiring a free 5g soon. I can't setup any bigger of a tank then a 10g right now, so I just wanted to see about a nano 5g. I'll just put a betta in it then. Thank you 3.

1 neon goby would be just about all you can handle.
MAYBE a few inverts, but thats pushing it.

I saw a website where the guy did a 2.5 gallon picto reef. He was also super experienced and I believe he took it down because of the work. A days worth of water evaporation could easily be fatal to livestock. I wouldn't personally attempt anything smaller than a 10 gallon sw tank.

I'm attempting a 10g s/w and it is becoming a hassle and I have experience. I don't recommend anything smaller than a 30g for someone just getting into s/w. Why not make it a betta tank or something?

Is this what your talking about? [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
Also, I think that a 5g nano would look cool but hard to take care of.

There is a tank of less than 5 gallons at my lfs, and it has a built in sump like thing. I wouldn't touch a tank that small with a 10 ft pole.

Probably connected to a tank that can hold at least 10 more gallons.
I'm not considering the idea anymore. I'll put a betta in there with a frog and snail, I think.

I'm starting up a 10g nano tank.
I'm trying to do it completely separate from my 72g reef.
Not connected to anything, except I might plug it into the ATO if I ever go on vacation.
I'm stilling setting it up and stuff, just need to pick up some LR and wait for some online orders to come in and it'll be all set.
There's a big difference between a 5g and a 10g, and for SW beginners aim for around 30g. Although a 10g wouldn't be too hard if you only wanted 1 fish.

What are you putting in the 10g nano nick?

If you want a small sw tank, I'd suggest a 20g. I am setting one up right now, and I am glad I got it rather than the 10g. It has alot more space to aquascape in, and more equipment space.

I'm thinking a single firefish.
It's mostly going to be about the corals and inverts, so I don't want a huge bio-load in there.

what kind of firefish?
Helfrichi, purple, orange?

I've still deciding that part.
At this point though, I'm leaning towards the regular firefish, Nemateleotris magnifica. Mainly because I like the first dorsal rays that most of the other fire's seem to lack.

Thats basically what I wanna do except with a black percula clown instead of a firefish, I have one in my 55g and they startle to easily.

Ya I know they do, but that may only be because he's in your tank with all those other fish, by himself with a few other inverts I think he'll be much more easy going.
I was going to put in an ocellaris, but at the moment I'm going for a firefish, it could change anytime though, lol. I'm really just aiming for a fish that doesn't really need much, so I can focus more on the corals.

When my nano reef was a 10 gallon before I switched it into the 15gallon it is now I had two fish, inverts, and coral and no bioload problems. I was also using a skimmer so that helped a lot. As for ocellaris being frighened, mine is down right mean. If my hand goes into the water at all anywhere in the tank it is in fight mode and out to bite for blood. Must just be the individual fish for it's personality :hmm3grin2orange:.
