Well.....My Mantis shrimp got lucky this weekend. When I got her, I set her up in a 10 gal tank that was supposed to have been a quarantine tank and gave her a pile of rubble and a few sick zoanthids as decor. Kind of a downtown slum look in the world or reef aparments.
Yesterday, my reef club had a "crap swap" at one of the lfs. A crap swap is when a bunch of you pull all the extra reef related junk out of your garages and closets and set up a little swap meet stand in front of the participating lfs (who also puts out a bunch of stuff that he has lying around) and just blow it out!!!! I'm telling you....the prices were AWESOME!!!! Used pumps and powerheads from a rio 90 all the way up to Mag 7's going for $5. Used heaters at all wattage $5 (we're talking Jaeger heaters even titanium ones), Tank and stands brand new going for $1 over the store's cost. One guy bought three Gen-X 150 pumps for $20 each!!! Personally I picked up a maxijet 1200 and a Mag 5. Then I found the base rock at 25 cents a pound. Yes you heard me.....25 cents a pound!!! Nice base rock too. I got over 30 lbs for under $8!!!! I was going to redo the Chiragras little one bedroom slum and make it look a little nicer. UNTIL she started complaining that she wanted a luxury condo in the country. I mean adding new furniture to her existing tiny space would just make it a little too crowded. It was bad enough she has to share with whatever snail or Emerald crab comes to visit (mind you some of them have a very short visit. I think it's rude to eat the guests, but she disagrees!
Since I do EVERYTHING my little mantis master tells me to do, I returned to the swap and practically stole a used 24 gal JBJ Nanocube and stand. by stole...I mean I paid $20. You heard me $20. Of course I told her I paid much more. Maybe the guilt will make her a little more humble.
So her new luxury condo is under construction. She is currently staying at the refugium motel until I'm sure the params in her new condo are good to go. I shouldn't have much of a cylce if any at all because I used the sand from her original tank, all the lr rubble, and dry base rock. I imagine it will go through a mini cycle though, as her 10 gal did.
I'll post pics of her new set up later. I kind of like the scape. I do however, need to figure out a skimmer option for this tank, as it doesn't accomodate an hob skimmer.

Very nice I like that. You gonna put a bunch of corals in there?

Oh yeah. I have the zoas from the 10 gal in there now. I also have a Kenya frag that will go in and some other more colorful zoas. A piece of frog spawn, candy canes. And whatever else I come up with.
I recently had a 16 hour power outage. Lost my pulsing Xenia in my big tank, and it looks like some other stuff isn't doing too well, but will likely recover. For the most part it looks ok. but once the big tank levels out....I'm gonna move a little of the stuff from there in to the 24.

Very nice Gem! The tank should look really nice once the water clears up and everything! I love the aquascape you got going!
Are you going to be adding more sand to the tank?? I heard that Mantis Shrimp like alot of sand so that they can dig in it.

Nope. that's all the sand. She's got a big pile in the middle. she has enough to move around.
I was wrong when I thought I wasn't going to get much of a cycle. My params overnight are nuts
amonia 1.0 nitrite .50 and nitrate 40. I'll be moving the zoas that are in there now to my fuge with the mantis.

Thanks. Gonna have to figure out something with this nano. It really got hot today. When I got home from work the temp in the cube was about 81 or 82. Felt warmer than that. I'm going to leave the front part of the lid open tomorrow and leave the ceiling fan on. The AC is on all day and the cube sits pretty much right under the ceiling fan....we shall see if that helps. Otherwise...the heat could be being caused by too many power heads in the tank. I have a maxijet 600 running the filtration, then a 1200 for flow in the tank, but I also have a rio 90 pointed across the back midlevel of the tank and a rio 180 pointed toward the front glass on the left side as you look into the tank. I think maybe too much. I'll probably eliminate the one of the rios.

Haven't taken the zoas out depsite the cycle. I had my water tested at my lfs and I think there's something seriously wrong with my test kit. It wasn't as bad as I read. I'm not putting the Chiragra in till I'm sure all is good with the water and I have this temp issue straightened out. I don't have temp probs in my 46 and refugium and it's been over 100 here. YAY Central AC!!!

Kuli, I have a post with pics of her somewhere. I'll find it a post the link.

NOICE!!! Man I wish I could keep one but I don't think I have the room and the $$ to feed one.

If I recall correctly, the MJ 1200 pulls 20W of power. The MJ 900 only pulls 8.5W and the downgrade only costs you 65gph. You could run two MJ900 and consume less power then the one MJ1200. Your MJ600 only pulls 7.5W and your Rio's are only pulling 2.8W and 3.4W.

My money's on the MJ1200 causing your heat problems. Might want to turn it off and see what happens. That's the reason I went with the MJ900's in my tank.

Don't know if this will help, but with my cube, I ran it with the feeding door open and computer fans exhausting hot air out of the back of the tank. I found that this setup dropped the temps by around 4-5 degrees.

spud...yeah that's what I was thinking as well. Someone in my reef club suggested 2 900's as opposed to the 1200. I think I will either try 2 600's or 2 900's. Then I can take the rios out all together.

Coach - I have been leaving the feed door up the last couple days since the tank got so hot iwth it closed, and that seems to help. I also have a ceiling fan right above the tank that I left on and the A/c has been on as well. But it also hasn't been as hot Tuesday and today as it was on Monday. We shall see.
I'm actually thinking about removing the lid and leaving it open top. But then I would have to figure out a light for it as the lid can't safely be raised up over the tank. That I know of or have been told anyway.

Does the hood have vents in the back, that you can attach fans to? I think you would be really surprised what a small fan back there would do.

No, Coach, unfortunately it doesn't. So far leaving the lid up has resolved the heat issue. I'm not sure what will happen when it gets hotter again. It's cooled down to the low 80's the last couple days.
