Any suggestions on how to catch and move an 18" pleco? I am giving her to a woman with a 65g tank. I have moved her before, but she was MUCH smaller then. I have had her 8 years and don't want to stress her too much.

Wow, that is a massive pleco - mine is only about 13-14inches. When we moved house, I put a bucket into the tank and made it work it's way into the bucket, then i transferred it into a chilly bin/esky (not sure what you'd call them over there). I always have the same water from the tank so he's not "over" stressed. Don't try with a net because he'll get tangled up and could hurt himself.

GOOD LUCK:ezpi_wink1:

Well, I got her moved. I had to use a net/hand combo. She was too strong for me to just pick up out of the tank (like I did last time). Fortunately, she was very trusting and the move was only tricky for about 15 secs when I had to get her head out of the net. I tell you though, I would not want a pleco brush up against me if I were swimming, that armour really hurt when it's scraped against your skin.

haha that is very true, they hurt more head on though rare because they normally swim away still sucking on something like the glass. Kinda funny

When we brought our large pleco home from a friends 55 gal to put into our 90 the only method we could use was for him to grab the fish. Of course he is an avid fisherman and that made it pretty easy for him. Brought him home in a bucket and then hubby had to catch with his hands again to transfer to the 90 gal. As much as I would have liked to just dump the bucket and all in, tank maintenance at my friends leaves alot to be desired and so all we could do was grab it and put it in. Plecs are quite hardy and he is doing just fine....loving his new home and bickering with the oscars!

I recently moved a 12 inch Pleco from a 29 gallon to a 75 gallon and I used a large net that you would use to snag killies when you go fishing.

I have handled a pleco before but it wasn't a pleasant experience :-)

The large net worked great and he is doing super in his new home :-)

Wow....12 inch pleco in a 29 gal aquarium....that isn't even 3 times his size. What was the situation that led him to be housed in such a small tank? Kudos to you for upgrading him to a new home.
