Hi, I have a 3 goldfish in a 45 gal. tank for 6 years. One has fin and tail rot with black on the tail and fin rot. I treated with triple sulfa 4 times but still has the problem. The water tested well. The ammonia is 0, the nitrites 0, nitrates about 20. and the ph is 8.0. He has had this problem for quite some time. I have treated with melafix before and have been using salt. He also seems to be blind in one eye. He is a shurbunkin with black on him anyway, but he is getting more black spots and I can't figure out how to treat this. Any help would be appreciates. Thanks.

hi and welcome here,
How old is your friend? I do not know the life span of goldfish, but do you think it can be the old age?
Have you some pictures of him, some people here can certainly help you diagnosis this.
Do you heat your tank? goldfish are "coldwater" fish, and a heater can be dreadful for them...

Sorry for having no answer at the moment, but I'm sure someone here will come with it.

Best of luck!

I dont know much about tail and fin rot but with goldfish, who are generally peaceful fish I'm wondering if you might have a bigger problem. The water is fine so Its not that he is in a poor environment. Whats the temp of the tank??

I'd suggest reading the article from the AC on this: http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/disease/tailfinrot.php

could it be TB?

It's not old age, goldfish usually live for a really long time, unless the filter is inadequate or they are kept in tanks which are too small for them.

Goldfish will live for at least 30 years if kept properly, and it is not uncommon for them to live for over 40.

What kinds of goldfish are they?

The shubunkin is much to big for that size tank.

yep, they can live for a long time, i bought one in 2002 that was born in 1976, but he died in 2003

how highs the temperature in the tank?

iT SHOULD BE EITHER THAT THE TANK IS SMALL OR THE TEMPERATURE IS HIGH

goldfish can also change color, so it might actually be normal, as long as it is the scales turning color, not something else.
