At the moment I recycle glass, plastic and aluminum cans. But starting in July our city is starting up a curb side recycling program. You can recycle glass, plastic, aluminum, tin, newspaper and cardboard.

Uh no....We have a burn barrel. Well we do save cans because they don't burn and we take them in for like 10$ when we have a truck bed full LOL.

They Started a Recycling Program at my school and some of the stuff garbage has caused is horrible. Their is a spot in the ocean twice the size of Texas and where is 6 times more garbage then Plankton.

The North Pacific Gyre AKA The Great Pacific Garbage Patch.....just reading about that is enough to make most people think twice about recycling and trying to produce as little waste as possible.

I am also working on starting a compost. Its in the plans.

Shalafi--Good for you girl! :19:

I was raised doing it, so to me its like cans, paper, etc do not belong in the trash, just like the milk doesn't belong in the cabinet, and cereal doesn't go in the fridge!:thumb:

Only aluminum, copper, brass, and Iron. Aluminum is 60 cents a pound, copper is 6 bucks a pound, brass is 4 something a pound, and iron is 125 a ton.

Some of the "waste" statistics are drastically blown out of proportion.

Meh. To recycle here, you have to pay a monthly fee. Thats a load if I ever heard one. If they want to "Save the earth" by collecting milk jugs, it should be free.

Nope..

There's convincing arguements that recycling makes as much waste as it reclaims.. Fuel for the many trucks hauling the recyclables to the recycling centers, and the pollution from the exhaust.. The electricity used to power said recycling centers, etc.. All the printed material used to promote paper conservation and recycling.. All the money spent advertising it that could be spent saving the rain forests....

And it costs MORE to reclaim and reuse almost everything they recycle.. Tin cans being the exception.. It IS cheaper to recycle those rather than mine more bauxite..

The whole myth that landfills are overflowing everywhere.. If you put them all together and looked at a map of North America the total land area covered is a tiny speck! They don't leak anything into the water table, either..

Just a big waste of time and money, in my opinion..

This is actually the best thing to do if you want to justify recycling.
The only material that is recyclable that actually saves money by recycling it is aluminum.

Plastics - It costs most money to recycle plastic than to use more plastic to make something, also recycled plastics cannot be used to make everything that non-recycled can be used for.

Paper - 99.9% of the paper we use comes from tree farms, tree we have planted. In fact, there are more trees now than ever before (recorded) due to the amount of trees we plant for paper. So when you recycle, we plant less trees because we need less for paper, and then there are less trees. So yes, by recycling paper you are actually reducing the amount of trees in the long run. Take that greenpeace!

Wood - Same thing with the trees, we plant a tree for every tree we cut, and most of the wood comes from trees grown strictly for that purpose.

Recycling is mostly just a fad, it makes you FEEL like you are helping and not much else. Has anyone ever seen the Recycling episode of Penn & Teller's BullS$#^? Great show, great episode.

Fact is, if paper and plastic were actually worth something to recycle, you would get 5 cents for them just like cans. Until then, dont take anyones word on recycling, go look up the stats online.

EDIT: Doug Z - about the landfill thing you are totally correct, it is a complete non-issue whatsoever.
