Cleaning canister filter

Just curious, I started cleaning my canister filter. this is the first ever clean on it. The tank has been going for just over 3 months now.

Am I meant to keep the disgusting water in the canister? Or am I meant to get rid of it, & fill it up with fresh but cured water, or am I meant to empty it, & let the tank water fill it up? The instructions in the manual did not give any tips on cleaning!

use it to water house plants, hook it back up and let aquarium water refill

make sure to prime the filter if needed after its emptied

but yep, with the old water you can throw it in plants or gardens, i rarely clean my canisters but when i do i just drain the water
