View Full Version : Can anyone recommend a safe modeling clay / putty for aquascape?

Hey there,

I'm looking to do an interesting sort of aquascape with a sculpted artificial-rock wall on the back wall inside of a 110gal tank. I'd like to use a firm, non-hardening modeling clay of some sort. Obviously it would have to be non-water soluble and safe for the fish. Can anyone offer any recommendations on what kind of putty to use & where to find it?

Thanks!

Styrofoam is most often used, covered with concrete and painted.

I'll probably use some styrofoam, but I'd prefer to stay away from concrete if at all possible.

What kinds of paints are aquarium safe?

Never did one myself, but here's a link you should find rather helpful: [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
Don't neglect the "sticky" at the top of the page, it has a whole list of links to specific threads that will save time and effort sorting through the folder.

If you get some Epoxy from the hardware store you can paint if over anything and then the sky is the limit with what you put into your tank.

yes you can do the background work with anything for the matter and coat the whole back drop with epoxy paint and then your work becomes water proof and safe for aquarium usage.
