A single specimen dwarf gourami can go with a lot of different fish. When you get more than one male however, the fighting usually starts.

The females usually aren't as colorful as the males either. Same basic color patterns but generally paler. I love the dwarf gouramis!

Good accurate point.

I have personally found the dwarf gouramis to be far more susceptible to illness than other fish. Just FYI.

Dwarf gourami can usually go with anything that can in a tropical community except other gouramis and bettas.

I would say the gouramis can hold their ground just dont put it in with aggresive fish....

also if you dont want the trouble of keeping your water really really clean, i would say a chocolate gourami would be a bad idea.

I had one honey gourami with 6 danios, two oto cats, and shrimp. It did great! It died about a month ago, from old age, I think. I got it at a lfs as a fish that somebody who was moving brought in, so I have no clue how old he was. I wouldn't mind having another though.

As others have said, if you have more than one male gourami in a tank, they will get aggressive. It would be best if you had one gourami in the tank, as it's often difficult to find females - also a little tricky to tell the sex of them. I'd play it safe and go with one. Maybe one gourami as your center piece fish, and then some smaller fish to go in the tank as well. Just a thought.

Don't forget to research the fish before you get them - do google searches and find all of the info that you can. It'll help a lot! Good luck :)

I have a dwarf gourami in a community tank with an angel, another gourami, clown loaches, pepper corys and a red tailed shark. The dwarf gourami is the meanest fish in the tank by far!!! He picks on everyone!! He's always trying to hit the angel and is always fighting with the other gourami. He's just a big meany!!!

I know that a lot of people have had issues with having more than one male dwarf gourami, but I have 2 in a 10 gallon tank that also houses 7 zebra danios.
In the beginning, one of the gouramis was a bit aggressive towards the other (chasing, and an occasional ramming) but after moving the decor a bit and target feeding them separately, they are now living in harmony. they like to annoy each other a bit on occasion but I haven't seen any truly aggressive behavior in over a month.
I say not to count them out as a possibility. They are beautiful fish and are very fun to watch. They never bother the danios (the zebras are way too fast to be bothered anyway!) I found that having two males can work, but in the end it can all boil down to the individual personalities of each fish.
I hope you find some of this helpful, but keep in mind that this is my own unique experience. If you do some searching on the forum, you will find that some fish can be characteristically aggressive... but that doesn't mean that they always will be! The main thing is to keep a close eye on any new fish and monitor their behavior, so you can intervene before anyone gets hurt.
I am sure others will give some good advice here for you. take it all in and make your own decision, and best of luck!

I have 4 gouramis in my 29 gal tank (2 blue, 1 flame, and 1 pearl) and they all get along great. They all occassionally chase each other, but that pretty rare. Although the flame one is usually pretty quite and hangs out by itself most of the time. The other 3 always hang together in the top corner of the tank.
