Ok, you can call me stupid if you want. I feel it. I love firemouths, but it has been about 8 years since I had a tank that I would put them in. I have only ever had them and angels so far as cichlids go. I used to keep a pair with a pair of angels, a few bettas, swordtails, guppies (which got to be a good source of food as they bred), and some other schooling type too. Never had any more than the occasional chase.
Now I have a 55gal and it is set up for a similar mix of fish. I have two angels, a male betta, some guppies, danios, a pleco, albino algea eater, redtailed shark, and 2 neons. I am waiting on a batch of green swordtails to arrive, but have a little problem with the two Firemouths I picked up.
They swore up and down they were the last two, and both were firemouths. One is obvious, but one is the reason I only have 2 neons of the 6 I started with three days ago. This thing is beyond vicious. It also has none of the color I expected. I thing I have a Convict and want rid of it ASAP. The "good" one is the only fish that can get close to it without shredded fins, and not by much. That one behaves typically and has yet to do more than give a chase or two. But if the other one kills one more fish it's going down the toilet alive.
I would put it in another tank, but can just see my wife's face when it gets a hold of one of her's or my daughters fish.
The shop still swears it's a firemouth. I say no way! Body is grey, with bars that darken when excited. No red or orange on the belly/gill area. The iridescence is there on the fins. I will see if I can post a pic later. It is too late tonight to try and get a good one.
