Well I am planning to use the donations for improvements only. That way all the donations come directly back to the users. I hvae a few things lined up that this might help realise.

By way of suggestion, maybe put a list of potential improvements somewhere obvious on the site so that people can see what they are "paying into" other than just operating costs.
