Hi,
I recently lost my german blue ram. I wanted to replace him with one or two new blue rams, but none of the local aquarium stores are carrying them right now. They do have keyhold cichlids and bolivian rams, but I think I want a fish with more color. I'm now considering getting one or two gouramis to be my tank's "centerpiece" fish.
I have a 30 gallon bowfront that currently houses 3 diamond tetras, 6 harlequin rasboras, 1 yoyo loach, and 1 albino bristlenose pleco.
How would blue gouramis work with that set up? Would my rasboras get attacked?
If I get a gourami, should I get one or two....and if I get two, does it matter if I get two males, or do I need to make sure I get a male and a female?
Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

I have a dwarf gourami with smaller tetras and gourami's and all is fine. I had 2 male dwarfs in a 20 gal Q together and they were also okay with each other. I have been lucky in that my gourami have all been peaceful and I haven't had the issues I have seen others talk about. I actually have the most problems from my white skirt tetras...they are mean boogers! Give it a try, just be prepared that if it doesn't work out you may have to return it. As for 2, my personal opinion is if they are young, which mine were, they are pretty adaptable, even if both are males. Make sure you have plenty of places for any fish to have their own territory and you should be okay.

Yeah, I'm one of those people that had a lot of trouble with the dwarf gouramis. I have two male dwarf flames (used to be three). The problems I had with them was some serious aggression, but only to each other. They get along fine with everyone else, and don't even give the little guppies a second glance. That third one I don't have anymore because he just got too sick. One of the remaining two seems to be having some sort of shaking problem.
They are beautiful fish, but just be prepared if you have problems with them. It seems that they are one of those kinds of fish that does fantastic in some tanks and not so well in others.
Or you could try the thick lipped gourami which only gets to about 4 inches, also has great color, and seems to be very hardy. Two males would be the way to go as long as they each have their own "home".

I have a gold and a flame gourami. The gold is so laid back and really mellow, but the flame has taken to torturing my 2 mollies, well one mollie, he killed the other. If he kills this one he will be out on the street...lol. I would suggest getting females.

I've not seen any gourami bother anyone but their own species and then it's just a bit of a chase with no one getting hurt. I think sometimes you're worse off getting males and females because the males will get more aggressive with one another with the mating thing going on. I haven't had any Honey's but heard they are very nice. I had power blue dwarfs and liked them. ok.
The color enhancing food really makes the color on gourami's brighten up nice.

Is there a temperment difference between dwarf gouramis and the larger three-spot or pearl gouramis?
Jeffs99dime, thanks for the compliment on my rock wall. Actually, it's a faux rock backround that I got at a local aquarium shop. It's made of foam and has a built in air bubbler.
