View Full Version : A Good Algae Eater
I'm having an algae problem especially on my plants. I already have a Pleco but it's not eating the visible algae. I'm looking for a good peaceful algae eater that I can keep alone. Maybe a certain kind of Oto or SAE? Can't keep shrimp in this tank.

What kind of algae are we talking about here? Not all algae eaters will eat all kinds of algae.

that is a good point...........otos are good but so are bristlenoses:19:
I have a rubberlip and hes not eating the green algae covering my plants mostly my java ferns. I'm thinking of getting a couple Oto's but I'd rather have one algae eating machine. What kind of SAE's are there?
So I bought 4 Oto's on impulse today. Acclimated them, put em in and than left for awhile. When I came back they cleared the whole left side of the front wall of algae. But they haven't touched the stuff on the plants yet. I seen one Oto with a bigger belly than the others

Otos are Otocinclus fish, a type of catfish.

Actually, Otos are one of the very few fish that will eat the diatoms. Ancistrus plecs will eat it but prefer green algae.

I have the opposite going on in my tanks, my pleco loves brown algae, doesn't go for the green.
you never know until you try:4:

Depending on how long you have had the pleco...
I've noticed that any time I have put a new pleco in my tank it usually will take about 3 -4 months before they really attack the algae. I ended up buying a little clow pleco aside from my original plecostomus, and shortly after they first bought pleco went to town on my algae.
Just what I've noticed!

Ottos are mini algae machines. However, mine for whatever reason, wont eat the small green hairs that typically grow on my glass. As much as I love my ottos, they just dont touch this type of algae in my aquarium.
Amano shrimp have been faithful to me.

We are making a 40 gallon native tank in our office. Can anyone suggest a native algae eater that can keep the glass clean, from NE Oklahoma.
