Well I have what I think is hairy algae in my tank its green looks like grass on the walls and leaves of my tank and plants and then there are some long strands about 2 to 4 inches long, Anyone know how I can get rid of it, I try to clean it off my plants with my fingers but it grows back, I did A 50% water change on the tank a couple of days ago and I didn't add any ferts, but since I don't have any fish in the tank yet I've been adding ammonia to the tank.

I accidentally wrote this in Doug's thread lol so I had to rewrite it again.

What types of fish are in the tank Adam???? If it is a tetra tank you can get Red Cherry Shrimp and they will eat the green hair algae...

how are the nitrates and phosphates in your water? Also cut the amount of time your lights are on.If this is a new tank it is not uncommon to have an algae outbreak.I wouldnt add any shrimp or other inverts to your tank just yet ,wait till you are cycled totally.

I dont have any fish in the tank, I just checked my nitrate and they are sky high, I havent checked it since I did that water change maybe 3 days ago but wow Thats my problem. My Phosphates are at 0, do you think I should do a water change?

water changes are always good, unless of course that is where your nitrates are coming from, check your tap water as well.
