OMG! I got about 10 iddy biddy baby snails that look like little cone shell types. I don't know where they came from but if they become a prop i'll just feed them to my puffers in another tank.
My shock isnt that they are there, but that they are thriving in a BW tank! I didnt think they were tolerant to BW.

Several species can only reproduce in brackish water.

Such as? Would you happen to know the name of a few that I can research and see if they are going to grow up into some sabertooh monster snail before they do? they aren't apple (mystery) snails because I know them very well. I'll try to get a pic or two but they are prefectly camouflaged in with my algae covered lava rock pile.

Don't trust me 100%, but if they are coned shaped then they could be Malaysian Trumpet Snails.

if they came on your plants they are proab. pest snails that will burrow down to the bottom under the rocks and keep it clean under there

Malaysian trumpet snails. breed like bunnies, mice, etc. overfeeding will contribute to their over abundance, so feed carefully. they only grow to about 2 cm, so don't worry about them being monsters. They do a good job of keeping the substrate clean however. They are a little lighter than gravel/fluorite so they are vacuumed out easily using a siphon (the vinyl tube itself, not the gravel vac).

As you can see, I have a good relationship with these little fellers!:1:

Malaysian trumpet snails should not be fed to puffers. Their shell is really hard and can actually result in the puffers beak/teeth being broken. They should only be fed to loaches, because the loaches suck them out of their shell, rather than crushing it.

then I think I should get some of these MTS.
I had mystery (or apple?) snails, they used to dart all along the tank, grow big (6-8 months) and then all of a sudden just die.

mystery snails have pretty short lives, and the warmer the water is the shorter they live.

that explains it... My water is around the 28-30 degC mark...

Yeah that would explain it. They can live up to 18 months in cooler water.

if they are coned shaped then they are pest snails. they also reproduce FAST I only started with 6 a couple of months ago and now I have close to 30-35.

Ok. Thats alot of good info from all of you. Thanks. I think they are MTS's like mentioned in your posts. Where they came from is the mystery of these snails. I have no plants in the tank they are in. Sand and lava rocks and drift wood. At any rate, I they are more than helpful for the moment. If they become a problem, I have a pair of Kuhli Loaches that would love to have them dropped in there hiding spots in my FW tank. :18: I'll keep you all posted.
