Does anyone else mount their submersible heater(s) horizontally, about 1 and 1/2 inches above the substrate. I've read that the heat distibution is more even if you do this just below the output of a HOB filter. The temperature setting on the heater is supposed more closely match the actual water temperature?

I've tried this with a Pennplax 100w submersible and I can't see that it makes any difference in heating efficency as oppesed to mounting the heater vertically. Maybe I'm just moving to much water with 2 filters so there's more heat lose?

I mount mine virtically right next to the intake of the filters, and for all of my bigger tanks I use 2 or 3 smaller sized heaters.

I haven't...but mine is on the right hand side of the tank and closer to the top...actually the water is usually warmer on that side..noticed that last night when i did a water change.

I do, horizontal close to the substrate the heated water rises helping with circulation. But my favorites are inline heaters with cannister filters, very even temps throughout the tank

I put mine diagonally.

I try to keep mine about 2 to 3 inches off the substrate horizontal in community tanks so cories will not get stuck behind the heater. For my oscar tank it is just in there as they move it around anyways....

i used to put mine horizontal, but i found no difference, the stupid suction cups let loose after 10 minutes so i just chuck my heaters in and let them rest ontop of the gravel

Agreed..horizontal or vertical or laying on the gravel...no diff.
