every time i shut off my filter it drains all the water, so every time i turn it on i have to get a cup and pour more water in it.. how do i stop this?
also, ny ideas on how to stop the noise of the pouring water going into my tank? somewhat annoying at night, i would normally shut off my filter, but if you read above you can see my problem

Is your water level up to the filter outflow? Pretty much with Aquatech filters, you will have to put a cup a water in the filter every restart.

The water will siphon out of them. Happens to all HOB filters to an extent. You have to break the siphon before it drains it.

Yep this is common. The larger HOB filters seem to be better in this area. The smaller ones I have almost always need to be bump started.

for your other question as long as you keep your water high you wont hear that noise, but if you dont have a lid that covers the whole tank you could have some fish jump out.

All filters will do that. It is reverse siphon effect because the water level is higher than the tank level so it exerts more force on the siphon and backfills the tank. Same thing will happen in a power outtage with an airpump. That is why it is always recommended you use a check valve in a airpump so you tank doesn't drain out if the power goes out. Pull the intake up outta the water until the intake is clear of water and it will not drain out....

Also I would like to add that, if you have any kind of air bubbles going directly into the intake of your filter you will get an increase in sound/noise.

couldnt agree more with above posts
When you stop the motor stops pumping water up into the intake and out the spout... so gravity does its thing and pulls the water back down which isnt being pumped around...
Have to allways start my AC 50 with a full cup of water :19: not a huge deal just when i wash the media and major water changes
