View Full Version : My New Bolivian Ram
I bought him thinking he was a German Blue Ram since the lfs had the tank labelled Blue Rams but they had him in with one other taiwan reef cichlid that chewed him up. Before this bolivian I got a GBR and before my GBR I got a balloon ram thinking it was a GBR. So now I have 1 GBR 1 Bolivi and 1 Balloon ram when my initial intention was to have GBR's. Well now I know how to tell the difference.

Are the above foto's of your GBR? That's a stressed Ramirezi (veiltail variety by the looks of it) in the above foto's and not an Altispinosa....

Poor guy is having some identity issues. Maybe you can get that fish on a talk show. LOL
Very nice fish and pics.. I want GBR's too. Hopefully, I don't end up in your predicament. :) Thanks for posting up!

hahahaha I can be wrong you know!! Females have a black stripe going down the front fins which this little guy doesn't have.. so even in the stress colors you can see it's a male :11:

Nice ram! shame about the fins but he'll get better!
sorry to hijack but Jess, wheres the black line you speak of ? where are the front fins?

They are the pelvic fins... the females have a black line going down the front of it. Also the blue sheen dot's they have shine through on the black marking in females on the side whereas in the male it is solid black and of course the tell tale pink belly coloring in the female are all ways to sex rams.

ah ok thanks Jess :)
Just so everyones not confused, the above pics are of my new Bolivian ram which I mistakened for a GBR. I plan to move him/ her to my 20g along with my balloon ram. I want my bigger tank to be strictly GBR community

But the pic you showed above is a blue ram
How sure are you? Isn't Blue ram aka Bolivian ram? To me he looks too pale to be a GBR. I'll post pic comparisons in a sec to prove my point
On the LEFT is a GBR. On the Right is what I believe to be a Bolivian Ram:

LEFT what I believe is a Bolivian Ram. Right is my Balloon Ram ( basically a GBR except round body shape).

Blue ram is just Mikrogeophagus Ramirezi. Bolivian ram is Mikrogeophagus altispinosa(osus).
That one you just bought for sure is a blue ram. It may be pale now but feed it quality foods and it will color up really soon. Plus Bolivian rams have a different color type than the fish shown.
I gues I was wrong, thanks for clearin that up for me. He doesn't look healthy, hopefully it's just cuz he's young. Is 4 GBR's too much for a 30g long I believe it is? I have good filtration 300+ gph.

Nah thats fine. Just make sure they have their distinct territories. That ram look slie one from Asia, definitely it's not a german starin, so you may or may not have health problems with him down the road. Whatcha feedin them?
I tried feeding them Hikari Bio-Gold Cichlid pellets but it is impossible to get them to eat from the top. I feed them HBH African cichlid sinking pellets. I also treat them with Tubifex worms cubes, live frozen bloodworms and brineshrimp.

Try NLS thera+a or community formula. It sinks moderaley fast and my rams just love it so much.

Once your rams settle in they take from your fingers right at the top!
I'll look around for the nls food but I don't see nls up here. I had my balloon ram in my 20g for a month and he never came to the top for me.

I ordered my NLS from http://www.bigalsonline.ca/ - just search for "New Life Spectrum".
Is it the Cichlid formula? Does slow sinking pellets mean they float around and eventually sink or they slowly sink down to the bottom? Would you guys choose the NLS Cichlid formula over the Hikari Gold Cichlid formula?

I tried both and my rams kept dying on cichlid gold. All the nsl formulas are basically the same, just pay attention to whether it floats or sinks, and the size. I use 1mm Thera+a, mainly becaus ethe garlic repels internal parasites, which it seems rams are so prone to.
