try cleaning the impeller, there might be sand or something else stuck in it

does it still do it if the wheel is stopped from spinning? If so check to make sure that it isnt rubbing its lid,it may not be seated all the way in its bearings.

i have AC's on my smaller tank and love them, the biowheel does a good job but its loud, and it is made of cheap plastic. AC > BioWheel

hmm i have allways thought that the biowheels seem to be such a better concept but soooo many people have problems and complain about noise...

I have 2 bio wheel type filters, I finally understand the bio wheel operation and the problems that occur. It actually works great now that I understand this.
Here are the key items to ensure the operation of the bio wheel type filters, like the emperor.
Most Important IMO Makes sure the water level is high enough in the tank, the higher the better. Low water level means the impeller needs to work much harder to pump water into the filter side, this is usually what causes the noisy operation and can be the hardest to figure out. I still some times forget this during maintanence, it is easy to overlook especially when you are taking items out of the tank.
Clean all debri from in side the tubing and impellar area. Rocks and debris can get sucked in the tubings.
Prime the filter appropriately, fill the filter side with tank water. This too will cause noisy filter operation.
Ensure that your impeller is not damaged.
Adjust the flow, pulling the tab all the way up for start up has worked well for me.
That is really it,

i personally dont like biowheels, only reason i bought one is because aquariumfish.net advertises the dam things 10 times per sentence. they spit out water too fast and arent the best filters
i just use canisters now, HOB's are just a pain, but aquaclears have never let me down

I concur, cannister or wet/dry is really the way to go for a tank that is going to be established. I only use HOB for my 30g and 10g hospital. And the 30g is really a multi purpose tank, it is only used for random ideas I may have. Thinking about going salt water with it though..

yeah, all of my tanks have a fluval canister with the exception of my 55g reef, which has no filter
