I toured a local wastewater treatment plant today. I thought it was interesting in the lab at the plant they had fish living in a tank filled with effluent. They had some bala sharks and tetras and few other fish. I just thought it was a pretty cool little PR bit.

I was watching Dirty Jobs a few months ago and while working at a water purification plant they showed that they used millions of Talapia in one stage of the purifacation process.

Yeah, little PR bits are funny sometimes. We had a mine not too far from my hometown that kept a heard of bison next to the mine to "prove" that they don't harm the envitonment.

Of course, they never showed us the massive talings pond behind the mine where nothing will grow for the next 75 years.

But the bison were there!

I've heard of plants in the treatment process, kind of along the lines of hydroponics, but not fish! Pretty cool!

Yeah, a lot of places are experimenting with this. Some of the newer mines are installing artificial wetlands to treat the effluents. It surprisingly effective at removing metals and suspended solids from the water.

I have haerd of this too. I am glad that they do this as well!

Its just to bad that some countries cant stop using pesticides like usa for agriculture. Think of how pretty all our rivers and cricks(creeks) would be... In norway they were shunned upon in the 80's because they were being stupid and dumping all their factory waste in the rivers... Salmon stopped coming and the whole lot.... they sharpened their act and does not have any waste in rivers or fjords. except whats in the ocean.. They are striving for clean water as well. Ooooo my good you need to try these salmon now... my uncle goes to this spot that you have to wait like 10 years to fish and we plcuk the salmon like were locals which we are and good its the best tasting salmon i have had in a long time!

You can even drink form the creeks and not get sick :) When i am in the mountains when i am thirsty i stick my head under a mini waterfall and fill up with the best tasing water ever! Lol I am missing home right now!
