But what i am wondering is it is a freshwater can i use the same filter and heater thats in there now for sw? i have lots of questions... i have a friend that has a very mature salt water tank and she said she would give me the water out of hers to start off with is that good?

You would be better off mixing your own water. The nitrifying bacteria doesn't reside in the water, but more so in the filter. All that getting her water would do would start your tank off with dirty water.

Thats a good thread to start out with equipment-wise.

The filter and heater will likely work. The media should probably be replaced in the filter. The FW bacteria will die off and not be useful in the SW tank.
Yes, you can have some of her coral when your tank is ready for it. That's a good way to go for aquiring cheap coral (be sure to return the favor when you get some large enough).
