I was checking out driftwood on Ebay last night and thought why would a person who lives amoung hundreds of creeks, lakes, ponds and rivers surrounded by hardwoods be looking on Ebay for wood!
I took a ride today to my old trout stream and wasn't there 5 minutes and dragged this from the water. I somehow had forgotten in the last 30 years since I was there the incline is at a 90 degree angle. Fast to get down but not so fast getting back up dragging heavy wood. :)
No way to boil it obviously and too big to soak in salt so a wire brush and some hot water was all I could do. Any bugs in there the cichlids will eat them anyway.
Tank is not decorated! I just tossed the wood in it to keep it wet and will play with different angles to put it later.

Nice one!
Let me know if and how much it changes the pH of your tank, if you wouldn't mind, and how much it discolours the water..
Congrats on your find, I have a creek by my house, but my neighbors claim they own it and tried to sue me for property damages the last time I was in there looking for minnows and cray fish

I'm dying to head back there now but the stream runs very fast and the water is very cold after that long winter. I am not wanting to walk in it yet!
Wish I had a spot like that in which to find good pieces!

Last year I drove around the two big lakes here and found nothing. Cottages are back to back and no way you can get to it. This place is only 3 miles from where I live. The back of this is kind cool as it has a hole in it and the loaches are crawling around inside it.
Another suckie picture but shows some of the branches better.

really thats a great deal, if I switch to sand tho wont it mess up the bacteria growth?
No. I switched over a tank from gravel to sand same day. No problems. Most of your beneficial bacteria live in the filter.
ok thats awesome home depot here I come!!! one mroe question, did you take all your fish out and let the sand settle or how did you go about switiching it?
Personally I didn't even remove my fish, although that certainly would be better.

WOW that's a great piece of wood. I have a nice piece I found but it won't fit in my 55g. unless I take a saw to it. Just one more reason I need a 75g. or bigger lol. Love the pic with the loaches in it. You do take nice pictures.

Pour the sand in buckets and rinse each bucket full 3 or 4 times. Leave your filters OFF until the sand has had time to settle prior to turning them back on. You don't want to suck the sand into the impellors on your filters.
