I was at a large lfs the other day and saw this little octopus in one of their tanks. He was seperated from the fish in the tank. I dont have a SW tank but i was wondering if anyone knows anything about them or has any, if so, pics? He was little but probably tentacles were a few inches or more with a head the size of a jawbreaker or a little more.

It all depends on what species he was as to how big he will get. The tiny species don't really need a large tank, but they need a super secure tank. An octopus can squeeze through a hole that is only slightly larger than it's beak. Also, they can give you a very very nasty bite. Some react to that bite and some don't. The down side to a lot of the smaller species is their very short lifespan. Many of the very small ones only live a year or 2 at the most and the males die after they have spawned.

Well its head was really small compared to its tentacles, and i read that species doesnt live very long cuz its already adult in the petstore, thats crazy about the escaping, i knew that octopus could squeeze through small spaces but i wasnt thinking about it leaving the water to climb out lol

they need a good fitting lid. also, some stores have trouble selling them, and they dont have the largest lifespan, so they will only live 2-12 months in your tank. i actually know a guy that got a octopus as a hitchhiker in his LR

Octopie (sp?) are amazing creatures. I saw a show on National Geographic I think once where they put one into a 55 gallon drum and closed the top very tight. It opened the top, climbed out, and was back in the ocean within about 2 minutes. They are escape artists to the extreme.

Yes...they can fit through any hole large enough for their beak to fit through. I have read somewhere that some school had one in a tank in one class and another SW tank in another class. The fish in the other SW tank kept disappearing and nobody knew why. One night the janitor found the octo in the hallway on its way back from lunch. Very smart creatures.

Wow, those tanks keep getting further apart everytime I hear that story. LOL The tanks in that story were,in the original story I heard, in a home and in the same room only about 6-8 feet apart. That story seems to be one of fish forum legend. I won't say it's not possible but it is funny how the tanks keep moving. LOL

Lol, I've seen one open a really tight aquarium lid before. They are fascinating, but probably not worth the trouble.

Duct Tape the hood down? Wont look so good but i have a feeling it would be able to bust scotch tape off, even my snail has no problem popping off my thermometer and heater which have really strong suction cups, he uses his muscle to use his shell like a ram and "bump" and push on whatever is in his way. Inverts are surprisingly strong, and ocean octopuses are insanley strong
